Ditmas Park & Flatbush

About Ditmas Park & Flatbush

Ditmas Park’s story began in the late 19th century as Brooklyn’s population grew driven by the development of the Brooklyn Bridge, the subways, and nearby Prospect Park.  In response to the need for housing and new land valuations, the farms located south of Park Slope began to subdivide and become residential neighborhoods Ditmas Park today is an urban oasis, with its grand Victorian homes set back with gardens and wooden front porches. It has a breathtakingly beautiful streetscape including sidewalks and medians lined with mature London-plane trees. Built mostly in the first decade of the 20th Century, this is a neighborhood that I particularly love. You’ll find historic Queen Anne Victorian, Colonial Revival, Tudor, and Bungalow/Craftsman style houses sited on extra large parcels of land; often with driveways and garages.

The area’s main commercial strip is Cortelyou Road with hip restaurants, cafes, food markets, and the popular Flatbush Food Coop. Its vintage streetscapes have made it a frequent movie and television set for Hollywood production companies. You may think you’ve arrived where Meryl Streep lived after coming to America in Sophie’s Choice. This is unlike any other place in the five boroughs and an area where we have been privileged to represent these fine homes. We’d love to show you the beauty and value you’ll find here.

Ditmas Park is located on land formerly owned by the Ditmas family and remained rural in character until the 1890s. One the early developers of the area was Lewis H. Pounds who sold homes to factory owners and merchants seeking a more suburban lifestyle. Considered part of Brooklyn’s Flatbush section, Ditmas or “Victorian Flatbush” has its own distinctive architectural heritage that is preserved by the Ditmas Park Landmark Historic District and the Fisk Terrace Historic District . The districts consists of about 2,500 mostly residential buildings built between 1902 and 1914. The typical boundaries of Ditmas Park are Ocean Avenue to Coney Island Avenue, and Dorchester Road to Avenue H.
